What Is a Physical Therapist?
Physical therapists are highly trained health care professionals who treat musculoskeletal, neurological, and geriatric pathologies. Physical therapists are trained to evaluate musculoskeletal injuries and neurological disorders, make clinical physical therapy diagnoses, and provide specific treatments, which may include exercise, massage, joint mobilization, or manipulation, as well as specific physical therapy modalities. Most physical therapists have advanced degrees and are critical members of your health care team.
What Can I Expect at My First Visit?
Prior to the onset of treatment, the physical therapist will perform a comprehensive evaluation consisting of a detailed history of your condition or injury, followed by a physical examination, including orthopedic and/or neurological testing.
The physical therapist will then develop a unique treatment plan that consists of a variety of therapeutic exercises, procedures, and hands-on treatments. Physical therapy often begins the day of your initial evaluation, so please wear loose-fitting clothing or gym attire and sneakers. On the day of your first visit, we ask that you come 10 minutes early to fill out necessary paperwork. You may also go to our forms(hypelink) page and download the forms so you complete them prior to your first visit.
How Long Will I Have to Come to Physical Therapy?
This depends entirely on the individual and the type and severity of the injury. Physical therapy treatments can range anywhere from two weeks to many months of intensive therapy (for more severe impairments). It is important to remember that even when the pain has been eliminated, it is critical to continue the prescribed program to prevent future injury or a relapse. When you are finished with formal physical therapy, you are encouraged to participate in our unique Physical Therapy Transitional Wellness Program, which allows you to take advantage of our continued supervision and help in transitioning to an individualized fitness and wellness program.
Why Physical Therapy at Greendale Physical Therapy?
Greendale Physical Therapy & Sports Chiropractic offers one-on-one care for each client. We take the time to ensure that each client receives the highest quality of care. Our goal is to enable our clients to regain function, control their pain, and improve the quality of their lives. Our centers, located in a fitness center, afford our clients the opportunity to continue their care with our Physical Therapy Transitional Wellness Program. This program is designed to provide our clients with a schedule to continue their prescribed exercise regimens even after they have been discharged from formal treatment. Our unique program allows for a comfortable transition from injury and disease to independent fitness and long-term wellness.
Will Physical Therapy Hurt?
Physical therapy programs are not designed to inflict pain; however, it is common to experience some discomfort and muscle soreness while receiving treatments, performing exercises, or on the day after exercising. Slight muscle soreness is typically a positive indication that your body is responding to your therapy. Your symptoms will be monitored to ensure that you receive the best and most comfortable care possible.
How Much Does My Insurance Cover?
It depends on the type of insurance you have. Some insurance plans require a co-payment at the time of visit, while others require clients to pay a percentage or deductible. Most work-related and auto-related injuries are fully covered. We request that you check with your insurance company to determine your coverage prior to your initial visit.
Do I Need a Referral from My Doctor?
It depends on what type of insurance you have. Most insurance plans do not require a referral, but some do (e.g., if you have Blue Cross and Blue Shield HMO Blue, you need a referral from your primary care physician). We ask that you check to verify what your health insurance plan requires prior to your initial visit.
What Are the Benefits of Being in a Fitness Center?
Being in a fitness center is a huge benefit to clients who receive physical therapy. Fitness centers allow for comfortable transitions from injury and disease to independent fitness and wellness programs. Our partnership with Family Fitness provides our clients with the opportunity to use and become familiar with a wide variety of state-of-the-art strengthening and cardiovascular equipment. They also gain an understanding of the importance of overall fitness and become comfortable exercising in a fitness center environment. In addition, being in a fitness center allows parents to take advantage of the fitness center's child care services. There is no better place than a fitness center to receive physical therapy!
